AirPods: Reviews, Charging Case, Issues and More

In March 2019, Apple redesigned the AirPods and released the first AirPods update, which included a number of handy new features that improved the Apple-designed earphones even further. The AirPods 2 have hands-free “Hey Siri” technology, which allows users to control volume and switch music using voice commands rather than tapping on the AirPods with a finger.

The new AirPods come with an upgraded H1 chip, which replaces the W1 chip and improves connectivity. AirPods connect to your devices faster for a more seamless experience, and automatic device switching while listening to music is now two times faster. The second-generation AirPods’ H1 chip supports Bluetooth 5.0, which could improve range.

AirPods work with iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac, and you can effortlessly switch between Apple devices owing to the H1 chip. Traditional Bluetooth pairing methods can also be used to pair AirPods with Android phones and other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

The extra Wireless Charging Case for Apple’s AirPods 2 enables Qi-based wireless charging. The new AirPods are available for $159 without the charging case, $199 with the charging case, or $79 for only the charging case for your existing AirPods.

The AirPods haven’t changed in appearance, so they’ll continue to look like conventional Apple EarPods but without the wire. AirPods are totally wireless, yet they’re still only available in white, with no other color options.

When listening to music, AirPods have a battery life of up to five hours, and the case has a battery life of an additional 24 hours. With the H1 chip, the new AirPods are more efficient, and conversation time has grown from two to three hours.

When you open the Charging Case, the AirPods inside automatically connect to your device, and the AirPods can recognize when you put them in your ears or take them out using built-in sensors and an accelerometer, playing and pausing audio accordingly.

If you don’t want to use the Hey Siri feature, there are touch gestures built in for changing tracks, changing volume, and activating Siri if you don’t want to use the Beamforming microphones. When you speak, a separate voice accelerometer kicks in to shut out ambient sound.

Apple developed the AirPods to give high-quality AAC audio that sounds great with everything from tunes to podcasts, and you can wear both AirPods at once or just one if you want to keep an ear free to listen to the environment around you.

Although the second-generation AirPods miss some of the previously expected features, such as a new color, the H1 chip for improved connectivity and device switching speeds, the extra hour of talk time, the “Hey Siri” functionality, and the Wireless Charging Case make this an excellent improvement.

Apple has discontinued the first-generation AirPods with the release of the second-generation AirPods. Apple also sells the AirPods 2 with the AirPods Pro, a $249 version of the AirPods featuring Active Noise Cancellation and a new design with silicone ear tips, as of October 2019.

Apple distributes firmware updates for the AirPods on a regular basis, and the most recent one is 3E751, which was released in September and added support for automatic device switching.

AirPods Features Added in iOS 13

With iOS 13, you may pair two pairs of AirPods to one iPhone or iPad to share a movie or music with a friend.

There’s also a new function that reads incoming messages from messaging applications so you can hear what’s important and respond even if your iPhone isn’t nearby. The capability is compatible with Messages as well as third-party apps such as WhatsApp.

Design and Internals

The second-generation AirPods have no design changes or improvements compared to the first-generation AirPods. The AirPods are similar to Apple’s EarPods, which have been offered with iPhones for years, except they don’t have any cables.

AirPods are completely wireless and constructed of a gleaming white plastic. The AirPods are meant to nestle inside the ear and can fit a range of ears due to their shape. Because AirPods don’t have noise-canceling or sound-isolating capabilities, you can still hear what’s going on around you.

Despite the fact that AirPods were designed to fit a wide range of ear sizes, not everyone finds them comfortable, and some individuals prefer not to wear them when exercising. AirPods, on the other hand, tend to stay in the ears for the most part.

To offer stability and more space for internal components, each AirPod features a tail or stem that extends from the ears.

AirPods are able to operate independently because they don’t have any cords. You can wear both or just one, and owing to the technology inside, they work like regular earbuds when used together.

AirPods have a motion accelerometer and two optical sensors, which allow for tap gestures and ear identification. AirPods can detect when they’re in and out of the ear, so when you put them in, your music starts playing. When you take one out, the music stops.

The AirPods have two built-in beamforming microphones for voice calls and Siri commands, as well as a secondary speech-detecting accelerometer that can filter out background noise and focus on your voice.

Although AirPods are not water proof, Apple did apply a water repellent coating to the circuit board in the second-generation device.

AirPods Charging Case

Apple launched a new type of AirPods charging case with the release of the second-generation AirPods, designed to function with Qi-based wireless charging equipment.

The new AirPods Wireless Charging Case allows you to charge your AirPods with any Qi charger you already have for your iPhone. It was designed to work with Apple’s AirPower, but the AirPower was never released. However, the Wireless Charging Case is still suitable for use with other Qi charging pads.

Apple is still selling the original AirPods Charging Case, which does not support wireless charging, for individuals who do not require it. The AirPods with normal case cost $159, the same as the first-generation model, but the wireless charging function costs extra, therefore the AirPods with Wireless Charging Case costs $199.

The Wireless Charging Case is also available separately and may be used with the first-generation AirPods to provide wireless charging without needing to purchase a new set of AirPods.

The placement of the LED indication distinguishes the conventional Charging Case from the Wireless Charging Case. The LED is situated inside the lid between the two AirPods in the conventional Charging Case, but it is located on the front of the Wireless Charging Case so you can check if the AirPods are charging on a wireless charging base at a glance.

Apple’s AirPods Charging Cases are intended to extend the battery life of the AirPods and to keep them when not in use so they don’t get misplaced.

The tiny Charging Case is about the size of a package of dental floss and fits neatly into a pocket or purse. The AirPods simply slide into the charging case, where they are held in place by a magnetic connection and a snap-close top. The simple pairing process that the AirPods are known for is started by opening the lid while near an iOS device.
